Naples enters the days of anticipation, those leading up to December 16th, the feast of the patronage of San Gennaro and the third annual celebration of the miracle of the liquefaction of the blood. A ritual that belongs more to the city than to devotion, a blend of faith, memory, and identity that has been part of the life of Neapolitans for centuries. In preparation for the event, the "See Sacred and Mysterious Naples and Return" series dedicates its new tour of the Mysteries of Naples to the Cathedral, the heart of the Gennaro tradition. The guided tours, scheduled between December 12th and 14th, will begin in the Cathedral square and will be enriched by two special moments in the Church of San Francesco delle Monache, home of the Il Canto di Virgilio Foundation.
The proposed itinerary passes through some of the most intense sites of Neapolitan spirituality and myth, from the Dark Serpent of Porta Capuana to the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, to the imposing architecture of Donnaregina Nuova and the churches of the Santissimi Apostoli and Santa Maria ad Agnone. Each stop is an immersion in a wealth of legends, ancient rites, and symbols that reveal how Naples has always transformed collective fears into gestures of faith, and superstitions into art forms.
Teresa Armato, Councilor for Tourism and Productive Activities for the City of Naples, emphasizes that this year's tour focuses on key sites of Christian Naples, not only to recount the anticipation of the miracle, but also stories like that of 1631, when Vesuvius stopped over the city on the day the blood thawed, fueling a myth that continues to endure. It is this constant overlap between the sacred and the mysterious that makes Naples' relationship with its tradition unique.
Alongside the tours, the Il Canto di Virgilio Foundation is hosting a meeting dedicated to the figure of Pulcinella, a mask symbolizing the Neapolitan soul, suspended between comedy and tragedy, between life and its opposite. Through a dialogue between scholars, the mask once again becomes a bridge between worlds, interpreting a cultural heritage that unites memory, irony, and vision. The evening will continue with "A te, Masaniello," a performance that blends music, theater, and dance in a choral account of the city.
The initiatives are part of the "See Sacred and Mysterious Naples and Come Back" program, organized by the City Council's Department of Tourism and funded through the Campania Region's Cohesion Agreement. Reservations open every Monday on eventbrite.it, allowing residents and visitors to choose their own itinerary through the deepest roots of Neapolitan culture.
