Naples – It wasn't just a glance too far, nor a trivial dispute over traffic that sparked the violence on the night between Friday and Saturday. The stabbing of Bruno Petrone, the promising 18-year-old from Campania who was seriously injured in Chiaia, is thought to be due to "old grudges."

This is the turning point in the investigation that led to the arrest of four minors on charges of attempted murder, while a fifth youth was reported at large.

The confession and the motive

The circle quickly closed around the group of young people, all from families with no ties to organized crime. The turning point came when the perpetrator of the attack, a 15-year-old boy, turned himself in, accompanied by his lawyer, Vincenzo Maiello.

"I'm sorry," the young man whispered to investigators, before confessing to having hidden the knife used in the raid in his home. The weapon was seized by the Carabinieri, and the young man is also charged with illegal possession of a cutting weapon.

From the interrogations of the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office, a disturbing picture emerges: the meeting on Via Bisignano, in the heart of the "baretti" nightlife, was apparently accidental, but it acted as a detonator for previous conflicts, rekindled by an argument that occurred just a week ago.

The five have no criminal record. At the home of the 15-year-old, the son of a shopkeeper and a regular school attendee, the Carabinieri seized the butterfly knife used in the attack. The motive for the wounding is still under investigation. The four arrested were taken to the Colli Aminei First Reception Center in Naples, pending a validation hearing, which is expected to be held tomorrow or the day after.

Petrone's conditions

While investigations continue to determine the individual responsibilities of the other three 17-year-olds arrested and the fifth reported, reassuring news arrives from the hospital. Bruno Petrone's life is no longer in danger. The Angri Calcio midfielder, who previously played for Sorrento's youth team in Serie C, has shown great determination.

"He'll play again, he's a lion," his mother Dorotea declared, welcoming his teammates who had gathered at the young man's bedside. Messages of solidarity poured in, including the official one from SSC Napoli. Bruno's first thought, upon regaining consciousness, was for the pitch.

The security alarm

The episode has brought the issue of safety in nightlife areas back into the spotlight, highlighting a phenomenon of youth violence that transcends traditional criminal contexts.

The Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, after expressing his sympathy to the victim's father, announced a crackdown: he has ordered immediate increased security measures in Chiaia and the busiest areas during these holidays. The strategy will be two-pronged: immediate repression of violent offenders and prevention to stem a trend that increasingly affects minors from all walks of life.

It's sad to hear about these things happening in the city, especially among young people who should be thinking only about having fun, not fighting and hurting each other. We hope the investigations will lead to clarification of responsibility.
