Naples – Another tragic traffic accident has occurred on Via Nuova Poggioreale, the road that has been the focus of residents' protests for years due to its dangerous nature. Yesterday morning, a woman was struck by a scooter traveling at high speed in the bus lane, turning yet another road trip into a near-trail tragedy.
The victim, the mother of a resident who immediately reported the incident to MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, suffered compound fractures of three ribs and a fractured left ilium-pubic pelvis. Miraculously, she was spared the death toll.
Tension immediately erupted at the scene: traffic stalled, vehicles grounded, and a crowd of residents rushing to provide assistance. Images circulating on social media depict a now sadly familiar scene: panic, anger, and the usual feeling of helplessness as a road seems to be transforming into an urban racetrack.
"For years we've been denouncing Via Nuova Poggioreale as an extremely dangerous road," Borrelli stated. "People here are racing like on a racetrack, and the bus lanes are used as urban highways. This is unacceptable." The MP is calling for immediate, structural changes: speed bumps, raised crosswalks, speed bumps, and the establishment of true 30-mile zones. "We can no longer rely solely on sporadic checks," Borrelli continued. "Safety can also be ensured by physically modifying the roads."
This, he adds, requires an unprecedented crackdown with extremely severe penalties for those who drive dangerously and recklessly. "Anyone who puts the lives of others at risk is committing a grave act of irresponsibility. We cannot continue counting injuries and deaths before intervening."
