As part of operations aimed at combating predatory crimes, Carabinieri officers from the Sassuolo and Modena Operational and Mobile Units, with the support of the Savignano sul Panaro station, arrested a 39-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, both from Campania, believed to be responsible for an aggravated fraud against an elderly couple living in Zola Predosa, in the Bologna area.

On the morning of December 16, officers intercepted a previously reported car in Maranello, whose occupants had recently been involved in two attempted scams targeting elderly residents. The descriptions provided by the victims allowed them to identify the car and track the suspects to Zola Predosa, where, according to investigators, the pair carried out the scam.

Posing as Carabinieri officers, the two allegedly obtained gold jewelry, some of which had also been taken from a bank safe deposit box, under the pretext of carrying out "judicial investigations." The total value of the stolen goods was estimated at approximately €20.

The prompt intervention of the military allowed the alleged perpetrators to be apprehended shortly after the valuables were handed over, which were found in their possession and returned to the defrauded elderly people. Further investigation revealed that the 39-year-old was under house arrest in Naples for similar crimes.

The couple was arrested red-handed for aggravated and continued fraud; the man was also charged with evading house arrest. Following the validation hearing and summary trial on December 17, the judge of the Bologna Court confirmed the arrests and sentenced the 39-year-old, a repeat offender, to three years in prison and a €1.200 fine, placing him in pre-trial detention. The 22-year-old, with no criminal record, was released with a suspended sentence and the benefit of silence.
