Naples – An entire "ghost" apartment, complete with everything, hidden behind the appearance of a simple garage. This was discovered and seized yesterday by the Naples Local Police, Soccavo Operations Unit, in the Traiano district, on Via Catone.
The action was triggered by reports from several residents who had noticed unusual activity and suspicious construction. Upon arriving on the scene, officers found not just a simple shed or warehouse, but a fully-fledged illegal structure of approximately 150 square meters, erected illegally on municipal land.
The structure, which might have been deceptive from the outside, was divided into two clearly defined areas. One section was used as a garage, while the other concealed a fully-fledged residence: two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom, in a space built without any permit and in complete violation of urban planning regulations.
The investigation led to the identification of the alleged perpetrator: a 47-year-old woman, a local resident, who has now been reported to the judicial authorities for illegal building. In addition to facing charges for the crime, the woman will have her property—built on public land—preventively seized.
The incident refocuses attention on the phenomenon of illegal occupation of public land and widespread unauthorized construction in several city suburbs. According to officials, the Local Police's intervention demonstrates the importance of collaborating with residents, who are the primary sentinels of the area.
"Regional surveillance and the fight against illegal construction are our priorities," command sources commented. "This case, with its scale, demonstrates how illegal construction is sometimes not just a 'small variation,' but a full-blown misappropriation of public space, with obvious risks to safety and urban decorum."
The area is now cordoned off and sealed off, pending court decisions, which could order the demolition of the illegal structure.
