Naples – A fight that started in a nightclub and escalated into brutal violence, played out inside a private home and relaunched on social media like a macabre trope.
This is what happened last December 25th in Naples, where a young woman was attacked by five girls her age, who forced their way into her apartment after an altercation in a club on Via Foria.
According to the reconstruction, the argument seemed to have ended inside the nightclub. A few hours later, however, five women showed up at the victim's home, forced entry, and began a vicious beating. The young woman was repeatedly hit, insulted, and subjected to extremely violent torture.
The entire attack was filmed on cell phones and later shared on social networks.
The victim, seriously injured, was taken to the hospital for treatment. The incident came to light thanks to Radio Napoli Centrale, which brought the matter to the attention of Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who is now following the case directly.
"This has gone beyond all limits," Borrelli declared. "Not only have these girls, all very young, committed brutal and inhuman acts, but they have also chosen to display them on social media, further humiliating the victim and boasting about their criminal actions. This is a truly gross level of savagery and recklessness. Immediate and decisive action by the authorities is needed: whoever committed this violence cannot go unpunished, and the young woman who was attacked must be guaranteed full protection."
This episode refocuses attention on youth violence and the misuse of social media, which is increasingly being used as a tool for exposing and spectacularizing crime.
