Naples – It seems like an impossible paradox in the shadow of Vesuvius, yet for thirty Neapolitan children, last night was a first. Despite living in the world's pizza capital, they had never crossed the threshold of a pizza place, sat at a table, and been served like real customers.
The "miracle" of normality unfolded at 18:00 PM in the heart of the Rione Sanità, where Ciro Oliva's pizzeria opened its doors to thirty young guests from poor families in the neighborhood. A simple gesture, yet one with a powerful symbolic value, capable of transforming a Tuesday at the end of the year into an unexpected celebration.
The protagonists are elementary school students who usually attend the Community of Sant'Egidio cafeteria. They receive a hot meal there once a week, but the experience of going to a pizzeria—the ritual of choosing from the menu, the wait, the sharing—had been a luxury until now denied by their families' financial hardship. Yesterday, however, they were able to choose their favorite pizza and share it, breaking down social distancing with their more fortunate peers for one evening.
The initiative is the result of a virtuous synergy between local businesses and the third sector. This special evening was created by Ciro Oliva, a well-known figure in Neapolitan pizza, the Community of Sant'Egidio, and the provincial Italian Women's Center (CIF).
"Pizza isn't just a dish, but a moment of conviviality, of normality, of joy," commented Fiorella Girace, president of the provincial CIF, who has long been at the forefront of supporting vulnerable communities in the region. She summed up the event's profound meaning: "Offering it to those who have never been able to afford it means giving back a piece of childhood." This alliance demonstrates how food, in Naples, remains one of the most powerful tools for social inclusion.

It's wonderful that the children of Naples had this opportunity. Even though pizza is a simple dish, it was a great experience for them. I hope there are more similar initiatives to help other children in need.
