Naples – The NAS Carabinieri's offensive against food irregularities threatening Neapolitans' tables around the holidays continues.

The latest operation, which began at dawn today, struck the beating heart of the Pignasecca market. The military targeted a local fishmonger, where approximately 240 kilos of fish unfit for human consumption were found and seized.

The operation, coordinated by Chief Warrant Officer Massimiliano Ugliese together with Chief Warrant Officers Scala, Giaquinto, and Nappi, brought to light a series of systemic violations of health and hygiene regulations.

Despite the owners' cooperation, inspections revealed storage practices deemed hazardous to public health: from products improperly thawed at room temperature to marinades prepared in premises lacking the necessary local health authority (ASL) authorizations.

The toll for the operator is heavy: a €3,000 administrative fine. Specifically, €2,000 was imposed for irregularities during the defrosting and processing phases, while the remaining €1,000 relates to structural deficiencies in the premises. The entire batch of fish, removed from the commercial circuit, will now be destroyed to prevent it from ending up on consumers' plates.

Lieutenant Colonel Alessandro Cisternino, commander of the NAS in Naples, reiterated that surveillance has been intensified precisely in view of the Christmas sales peak. "The label is the identity card of what we buy," the officer emphasized, urging citizens to be wary of products without clear traceability and to only buy from authorized retailers to ensure the safety of their traditional holiday feast.

It's important to inspect the foods sold in markets, as many products are unsafe to eat. We hope these inspections continue after the holidays to ensure everyone's health.
