Borrelli attacks Salvini's reform: "It's a complete failure. We need a 30 km/h speed limit in urban centers."

Naples – Another serious accident has rocked Via Terracina in Fuorigrotta, reopening unhealed wounds in road safety. Yesterday evening, an obviously intoxicated driver crossed into the oncoming lane while overtaking, striking a young man on a scooter.

The episode brings to mind the tragic deaths of Francesco Altamura and Lucia Morra, the couple killed in 2023 on the same road by a drunk and drugged driver, for whom the Court of Appeal recently upheld the 10-year prison sentence.

The incident was reported by Francesco Emilio Borrelli, MP for the Green Left Alliance, who was contacted directly by citizens, along with Rosario Pugliese, a member of the regional executive of Europa Verde.

"We are witnessing a silent massacre on the roads, with Campania at the epicenter of the tragedy," the two Green Party representatives state. "National data show an increase in accidents, but the regional increase is 6,2%, and in Naples alone, 7,9% in 2024. These numbers demonstrate the failure of current policies."

Borrelli points the finger at the recent reform of the Highway Code pushed by Minister Matteo Salvini: "This latest tragedy is the direct consequence of a Code that doesn't curb speeding, but almost seems to incentivize it. Allowing new drivers to drive powerful racing cars turns the roads into potential death chambers."

For the MP, the solution is urgent and radical: "Enough delay: a 30 km/h speed limit in urban centers, immediately. It's the only effective measure, along with speed bumps, raised crosswalks, and checks at critical points. In a densely populated province like Naples, it's better to proceed at a walking pace than to hurtle toward death."

Borrelli appeals to the government: "The streets of Naples and Campania can no longer be the scene of disasters. Citizen safety must be the top priority."
