Naples – A radio station that serves not only to inform, but above all to keep people company. This is the essence of the initiative promoted by the Casa del Volto Santo di Gesù in Naples, together with the community of the Little Handmaids of Christ the King and their benefactors, to support the homeless people they serve daily.
FM/AM emergency radios were distributed at the Casa del Volto Santo. These simple and reliable devices are designed to function even in the absence of electricity. Powered by a solar panel or hand crank, equipped with LED lights and capable of broadcasting voices, music, and news, these radios—designed for crisis situations—become a bastion of humanity and connection in this context. "A tool against power outages that, for those living on the streets, becomes a remedy for existential blackouts," the promoters explain.
"During a power outage, a radio helps you not feel isolated," emphasizes Sister Maria, Mother Superior of the Casa del Volto Santo di Gesù in Naples. "Even in life, there are moments of profound darkness. For those living on the streets, silence and isolation are often more burdensome than the cold. Turning on a radio means hearing a voice, sensing a presence, remembering that you are part of a community."
Alongside the radios, PVC and aluminum thermal blankets, essential for dealing with the coldest nights, were also distributed, as well as comfort items and Christmas treats, allowing even those without a home to share a sign of the festive season.

The initiative is part of a daily program of welcome and support. Many of those involved are regular guests of the Home and participate in the morning services before the Holy Face of Jesus in Naples, finding—as stated in a statement—not only material assistance, but also a space for listening, connection, and dignity.
For those living on the streets, loneliness often weighs more than cold or hunger. A radio that never turns off thus becomes a discreet and faithful companion, capable of inhabiting the time of waiting and the night, maintaining a connection with life as it continues. "Imagine a person under a porch," Sister Maria concludes, "who turns a crank, turns on a light, and hears a voice. In that moment, the darkness is no longer total."
A simple gesture that restores sound where there is silence, warmth where there is cold, and humanity where there is isolation, demonstrating how an emergency object can transform into an instrument of hope and closeness.

The Casa del Volto Santo initiative is truly wonderful and offers help to those in need. Radio stations can be helpful for the homeless, but also for maintaining community connections. It's important that there are more initiatives like this.
