Battipaglia – He had blended in with the travelers crowding the Battipaglia train station during the hectic days of the Christmas holidays, perhaps believing that the Christmas Eve commotion could shield him.
But nervousness betrayed a 59-year-old Ivorian citizen, captured yesterday morning by Railway Police officers.
The escape attempt
The man, born in 1966, fell victim to Operation "Safe Stations," an extraordinary plan of checks implemented by the State Police to ensure safety at railway junctions during the holiday season.
Upon seeing the uniforms, the man suddenly changed direction, attempting to disappear into the crowd and onto the tracks to avoid detection. This sudden movement immediately aroused the officers' suspicions, who caught up with him and stopped him before he could disappear.
A heavy criminal past
Verification of his identity through the inter-agency database revealed the reason for the commotion: the 59-year-old had a permanent arrest warrant pending against him. He was identified as a drug trafficker and received a very heavy sentence: he faces an 11-year prison sentence.
After the usual formalities were completed at the Railway Police offices, the wanted man was transferred to prison. This operation underscores the effectiveness of security measures at stations, which have recently become crucial "filters" for intercepting dangerous individuals who exploit the large passenger flows for their own travel.

A police stop outside a Battipaglia home resulted in the arrest of a foreign national on charges of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. The operation took place in the Lido Lago area, a coastal area of the Salerno town at the edge of the Sele plain, during a prevention operation by the local police station.
The man was stopped at the entrance to his home while he was with a Brazilian woman. The woman was found in possession of a package containing approximately one and a half grams of cocaine, prompting the officers to investigate further.
