Once again, the Supreme Court of Cassation has intervened in the case of the murder of Angelo Vassallo, the fisherman mayor of Pollica-Acciaroli killed in 2010, and has called into question the prosecution's case. The Supreme Court has, for the second time, overturned the order of the Salerno Review Court that had upheld the precautionary measure ordered by the investigating judge against Carabinieri Colonel Fabio Cagnazzo, former Brigadier Lazzaro Cioffi, businessman Giuseppe Cipriano, and former justice collaborator Romolo Ridosso.
The crux of the matter remains the serious evidence of guilt. On this point, the Supreme Court, upholding the appeal filed by Cagnazzo's defense, found the Review Court's decision inadequately reasoned, ordering the transfer of the case to another section, now called upon to reevaluate the entire evidentiary framework. This decision weighs heavily on an investigation already plagued by severe judicial disputes.
The four suspects were arrested about a year ago, accused of various charges of involvement in the murder of the mayor, a symbol of the fight against crime and speculation in the Cilento area. The Salerno Court of Review initially confirmed the precautionary measures, but later revoked them, leaving the four detained for a total of seven months.
With this new annulment, the Supreme Court of Cassation does not address the merits of liability, but once again highlights the fragility of the assessments made thus far regarding the alleged evidence. This is a strong signal that reopens questions and prolongs the process of a complex legal case, which has been awaiting definitive truth for years. The case now passes to a new panel, called upon to reexamine the documents and rule on the basis that, for the second time, the Supreme Court has deemed insufficient.
