Starting January 1, 2026, the toll on the Naples Ring Road could rise from one euro to 1,05 euros. The increase is not yet official, but it is part of the toll increases announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which is expected to issue a decree on motorway price increases in the coming hours.
Nationally, an average increase of 1,5% is expected, while for some routes the increase will be more significant. This is the case for the Naples–Pompeii–Salerno route, for which a 1,925% increase has been forecast, higher than the national average.
In addition to the cost increase, concerns are growing about the impact on traffic. The change from €1 to €1,05 will require more change at toll booths, threatening delays and queues, especially during rush hour. To limit the inconvenience, the Naples ring road has already stocked up on five-cent coins, in an effort to streamline traffic.
The toll for cars on the ring road has been fixed at one euro since 2017. In recent years, despite percentage increases planned at the national level, the rate has never been adjusted because the increases translated into one or two cents, not enough to exceed the rounding threshold to five cents.
"At the moment, there has been no official communication from the Ministry regarding the 2026 tolls," the Naples Ring Road said, "and therefore it is not possible to speak with certainty about an increase." The concessionaire also clarifies that any increases are not the result of its own request, but rather of a general adjustment implemented nationwide.
Meanwhile, the Transport Regulatory Authority (ART) has intervened on the issue of motorway tolls, introducing a significant innovation in December: the "pay per use" principle. Under this approach, concessionaires will be able to obtain toll increases only after demonstrating that they have actually completed improvement work on their assigned sections. It will no longer be possible to request increases to finance future work. This formula, however, is not yet applied to the Naples ring road.
The average increases of 1,5% were approved following a ruling by the Constitutional Court, which rejected the rules adopted between 2020 and 2023 to postpone toll adjustments pending the concessionaires' new economic and financial plans.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Transport clarified that the Constitutional Court's decision "has undermined Minister Matteo Salvini and the government's efforts to freeze tariffs until the new regulatory PEFs are finalized," emphasizing that the Ministry "can no longer intervene" to block the increases.
Finally, for the Salerno–Pompei–Napoli SpA line, the ministry confirmed a tariff variation above the national average, thus certifying one of the most significant price increases of 2026.

I don't think this increase is that big, but the problem is that people are already having trouble paying. Then there's the risk of queues at the toll booths. Let's hope it doesn't cause too much inconvenience for everyone.
