Naples – It was a fiery evening yesterday on Via Bologna, just steps from Piazza Garibaldi. A 30-year-old Nigerian, an illegal immigrant with a criminal record, was arrested on charges of aggravated damage to state property, assault, and resisting a public officer.

According to the State Police's reconstruction, officers from the Vasto-Arenaccia Police Station were on patrol when they spotted the man. Upon seeing the patrol car, he immediately changed direction, attempting to disappear into the alleys.

The police reached him within seconds, but apprehending the 30-year-old proved far from easy. A violent struggle broke out: the man put up strenuous resistance, even kicking the side of the patrol car, which was visibly damaged.

Only the intervention of reinforcements from colleagues at the San Carlo Arena police station allowed him to be immobilized and loaded into the second patrol car. But his fury did not subside even during the journey to the police station: the 30-year-old continued to struggle and threaten the officers until he arrived at the police station.

Following the investigation, the man was placed under arrest. A fast-track trial is expected this morning. The incident refocuses the spotlight on security in the Central Station area, a site of petty crime and degradation for years.

It's incredible how there are increasing incidents of violence in this area; the authorities seem unable to manage the situation. Something concrete must be done to improve safety for everyone, not just residents.
