Naples – He allegedly demanded a transfer to another unit and, when the officers refused, reacted violently. This, according to the prison union, is the trigger for the attack that occurred a few hours ago inside the Poggioreale prison, where an inmate beat two prison officers, forcing them to seek hospital treatment.
The episode, described as "serious" by union representatives, occurred for what are described as trivial reasons, most likely related to a request by the inmate to change departments.
When the staff on duty responded negatively, the man allegedly went on a rampage, attacking the officers with kicks and slaps.
Raffaele Serra, union leader of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union (Sappe), made the incident public, describing it as yet another act of violence against staff.
"At the Poggioreale prison," he states, "a serious incident of violence against prison police occurred. Two officers were injured and required medical attention."
This new alarm adds to a long series of daily attacks and tensions within the Naples prison, which has long been the focus of union complaints over overcrowding, staff shortages, and increasingly difficult working conditions. These situations, according to the SAPPE, expose staff to constant risk and transform routine incidents into potential outbreaks of violence.
The incident refocuses attention on prison security and the often-repeated need for structural interventions to protect prison officers, who are called upon every day to ensure law and order in increasingly complex environments.
