Naples – The sound of gunfire shatters the quiet of Christmas lunch. It's December 25th, shortly before 17 p.m., when a 25-year-old woman calls 112 from the Ponticelli neighborhood in eastern Naples. Her voice is broken by fear: "He shot, it was him."
Moments earlier, gunshots had struck his car, a Lancia Ypsilon parked outside his home. Two shell casings lay on the ground, two clearly visible holes in the hood. An unmistakable message, delivered on a day that should be dedicated to his family.
Carabinieri from the local station responded to the scene. The woman said she had installed a video surveillance system for her own protection. Looking at the footage, she immediately recognized the man who fired the shots: her ex-partner, 32, with whom she had been in a relationship for about five years. They had two children, aged three and one and a half.
The officers recovered the shell casings and began investigations with the Forensic Investigations Section. Meanwhile, the man was nowhere to be found. The victim was taken to the police station, where he filed a report.
She recounts nearly two years of harassment, stalking, and constant threats. She had already reported him for stalking. In the days prior, she says, a fake social media profile had also appeared, from which she was receiving disturbing messages: they explicitly spoke of damage to her car.
The investigations confirm a pattern already known to law enforcement. The 32-year-old has numerous prior convictions for threats and stalking. He also has a restraining order against his wife and children, a measure that didn't prevent him from attacking again, escalating the violence.
The camera footage is clear: a man approaches the car, takes an object from his pocket, aims it, and fires, then quickly walks away. The audio footage records at least four explosions.
A manhunt is underway. The Carabinieri are moving around nonstop, while security is stepped up to protect the woman. That evening, a search is also conducted at the suspect's home, but the man remains unaccounted for. The judicial authorities order a deferred arrest and remand in prison.
At dawn on December 26th, a patrol stationed outside the victim's home. She was interviewed again. She also recounted physical abuse she had suffered over the years, much of it unreported. A climate of terror, described as "Camorra-like," where control, possession, and fear dictated silence.
The operation deployed by the Carabinieri yielded results late in the morning. The 32-year-old was located and arrested at his home. During the search, clothing consistent with that worn by the man captured on video was seized.
He was arrested and charged with aggravated stalking. After his arrest, he was transferred to prison. This incident rekindled the spotlight on gender-based violence and stories that often remain hidden, until fear erupts in gunshots.

This article discusses a very serious and sad situation, and it makes me think that there are many women who suffer violence without being able to speak out. It's important that law enforcement do their job to protect those in need.
