Scafati – A dramatic judicial turn of events has reverberated throughout Scafati's organized crime scene. The Salerno Court of Appeals has issued a resounding acquittal against Pasquale Panariello, 31, from Gragnano, who had previously been sentenced to a very severe sentence in the first instance.
The decision completely overturns the sentence of 4 years and 2 months of imprisonment that had been imposed by the preliminary investigations judge of the Court of Nocera Inferiore.
Panariello had come under the spotlight of the investigation conducted by the Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate (DIA), which identified him as a key figure—the "spearhead"—of a criminal group operating in the Scafati area, linked to the Matrone-Buonocore clan. According to initial theories, the accused had personally managed the so-called "return horse" scheme: extortion of car theft victims, who were forced to pay a ransom to regain possession of their stolen vehicles.
The prosecution focused on two incidents that occurred in the summer of 2021, supported, according to the prosecutor, by a substantial body of evidence based on wiretaps, the use of Trojan horse software, and video surveillance footage.

Pandorogate: Ferragni acquitted: aggravating circumstance dropped and complaints dropped after compensation payments.
These elements should have painted Panariello as the mastermind of the extortion, the one who, thanks to his alleged top position and vast connections in criminal circles, was able to orchestrate the recovery of the vehicles in exchange for explicit payment.
On appeal, however, this accusatory framework revealed fatal cracks, eventually collapsing completely. The prosecution's "theorem" was dismantled by the skillful work of the defense, led by attorney Gennaro De Gennaro.
The lawyer successfully convinced the court that the evidence gathered against his client was insufficient and inconsistent. The lower court judges deemed the prosecution's case untenable, thus ordering a full acquittal for the defendant.
For Panariello, identified by investigators as a member of the "firemen" family from the Vetrai area—and brother of the late Marcello Panariello, a historic figure in the Scafatese criminal world—this brings to a close, after more than two years, a complex and burdensome judicial chapter.
