Naples – The last symbol of a troubled era has fallen to the bulldozers. Demolition work began this morning on the Vela Rossa (Red Sail), the last of Scampia's iconic structures still standing. This operation marks the point of no return for the area's redevelopment project, which was dramatically accelerated after the forced evictions in the second half of 2024 for safety reasons.
While the mechanical clamps are crushing the concrete of the structure—with work scheduled for completion in March 2026—the neighborhood is already changing. It's not just a matter of demolition, but of reconstruction: numerous construction sites are simultaneously underway for the new residential complexes that will house the families on the lot.
Update on the construction sites: the roadmap
The urban regeneration plan is a complex mosaic of coordinated interventions. Here's the current status of the main phases:
The Sails: While the Red Sails have just begun to wind down, the Yellow Sails (Sail C) are at an advanced stage of construction, with backfilling and the reorganization of traffic on Viale della Resistenza.
New Buildings (Lots A1-A4): The revitalization is proceeding rapidly. Work on buildings A1, A2, and A3 is progressing, including screeding, partitions, and painting, with completion scheduled for September 2026. Lot A4 is even further along: construction is scheduled for completion in April 2026.
Infrastructure and Consolidation: In Lot L, jet grouting operations continue to consolidate the ground, monitoring interference with the Enel electricity grid.
Beyond Homes: Kindergartens and Civic Centers
Scampia's challenge isn't just about residential construction, but also about creating a livable community. Final projects are currently being reviewed for:
A new nursery school. A multipurpose civic center. Primary urbanization works in the former M lot.
The goal: By the end of 2026, the area will no longer be remembered for its decaying concrete giants, but for an integrated system of services and modern housing.
The administrative process continues for the remaining lots (C5, D2, B5, and others). For these buildings, the final design and the Financial and Technical Executive Plan (PFTE) are being activated, a necessary step to ensure financial coverage and continuity of the work.
