A bloody Christmas on the roads of the province of Naples. A serious, fatal accident occurred on the morning of December 25th inside the Santa Maria di Pozzano tunnel, along the SS 145 "Sorrentina" highway, between Vico Equense and Castellammare di Stabia.
A 60-year-old woman, a resident of Meta di Sorrento, lost her life after being involved in a violent head-on collision between two vehicles. The impact, which occurred at kilometer 3,300 on the highway, left her with no chance of survival. Rescue efforts were unsuccessful: she died instantly.
The cause of the accident is still being investigated by law enforcement, who responded to the scene along with 118 paramedics and ANAS teams. Following the crash, the tunnel was immediately closed to traffic to allow for rescue operations, surveys, and the safety of the roadway.
The tunnel closure caused significant traffic disruption along one of the Sorrento Peninsula's most important roads, particularly busy even on holidays. After several hours of repairs, traffic returned to normal by early afternoon.
Traffic was reopened shortly after 3:30 PM, once the technical operations were completed and the crashed vehicles were removed. The tragic outcome of a day of celebration turned into mourning remains, yet another road casualty during a time that should have been marked by serenity.
