Sala Consilina – Another life lost, another tragedy that shines a spotlight on road safety and reckless driving. Carmela Langone, 74, a retiree living in Atena Lucana (SA), died late Thursday evening, the victim of a violent head-on collision that left her with no chance of survival.
The accident occurred on an internal road connecting Atena Lucana to Sala Consilina, a notoriously busy shortcut fraught with treacherous curves and narrow passages. Langone was traveling in a car with her fifty-year-old daughter when she was involved in a devastating collision with another car carrying two young men and a young woman, all from the Vallo di Diano.
The elderly woman's injuries were immediately tragic. Emergency medical services responded quickly to the scene, stabilized her, and rushed her to the Luigi Curto Hospital in Polla. Unfortunately, all attempts to save her were in vain: the 74-year-old died shortly after arriving at the hospital due to the severe injuries she sustained. The other four people involved, including the victim's daughter, suffered less serious injuries, but the shock of the incident is indescribable.
The situation, which the Carabinieri of the Sala Consilina Company, led by Captain Veronica Pastori, are investigating, worsened in the hours that followed. It emerged that the young driver of the other car involved tested positive for cannabinoid use.

This detail, if confirmed as the trigger, would dramatically worsen his situation. For this reason, the Lagonegro Public Prosecutor's Office immediately opened an investigation for vehicular homicide.
The body of Mrs. Langone, a mother of two daughters, has been seized and is being held in the morgue of the Polla hospital, available to the judicial authorities for examination. The victim's family has appointed attorney Michele Galiano as their legal guardian.
The Fire Brigade, who had arrived directly from the Santa Barbara ceremony, also intervened at the scene of the accident to carry out surveys and secure the area.
