Montefredane – A new, sharp earthquake has disrupted the sleep of thousands of residents between Irpinia and Sannio. The seismic event, registered at magnitude 3.0 on the Richter scale, struck at exactly midnight (00:00), with its epicenter located in the municipality of Montefredane, in the province of Avellino.

According to data released by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the hypocenter was located at a relatively shallow depth of 11 kilometers, a factor that contributed to its widespread impact across the region.

The seismic wave and its aftershocks

The main shock, although moderate in intensity, was clearly felt across a wide area that included several towns in Irpinia and nearby Sannio Beneventano, immediately drawing attention to the seismic fragility of the area.

The seismic activity didn't end with the midnight event. A few minutes later, at 00:18 AM, seismographs recorded a further aftershock of a lower magnitude, measured at 1.8, confirming the activation of a fault in the same area.

Fear on Social Media, No Harm

Fortunately, initial assessments by local authorities and the Civil Protection Agency have shown no damage to people or structures. The reaction, as often happens, was immediate and frenetic on social media. Dozens of citizens used platforms like Facebook and X to report feeling the earthquake, with messages ranging from alarm to requests for confirmation.

The overnight tremor rekindles concern in a community already affected by more intense events. Residents' memories go back to the recent past, when between October 24th and 25th, the same area was hit by a seismic swarm, peaking with a magnitude 4.0 event.

The INGV continues to closely monitor the situation, urging the public to remain calm while maintaining high levels of vigilance regarding seismic activity in the Campanian Apennines.

I think an earthquake is scary, especially at midnight when you're asleep. It's important for people to stay calm even if there are aftershocks. I hope nothing worse happens.
