Naples. Nine hundred kilos of fish and shellfish products without documentation regarding their origin and traceability were seized during the night between December 18th and 19th at the Mugnano fish market, in the province of Naples. The operation was conducted by the military of the Naples Naval Air Operations Department as part of economic and financial police controls and to protect consumer health.

The fish, ready to be released for sale, was found to be completely lacking the mandatory certifications certifying its origin and its path through the supply chain. This makes the products potentially unsafe for human consumption. The checks were conducted in collaboration with staff from the Naples 1 Center and Naples 2 North Local Health Authorities and the Regional Reference Center for the Health Safety of Fish.

During the operation, five individuals were identified and fined a total of approximately €6.500. The seizure prevented the illegal fish from reaching consumers' tables during a period characterized by a sharp increase in demand. Control activities along the entire seafood supply chain will continue and be further intensified in the coming days, coinciding with the Christmas and New Year holidays, to ensure food safety and legality in the seafood trade.
