The Italian Competition Authority (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato) has fined Sky Italia a total of €3,2 million for unfair commercial practices related to television subscription prices and certain promotional offers. The Antitrust Authority announced this in its Bulletin published today.
Specifically, a €2 million fine was imposed for "misleading communications about the price increases for Sky TV subscriptions," which were deemed insufficiently clear to consumers. A further €800 fine concerns the application of these increases to Now TV offers, advertised with the slogan "until you cancel," a phrase that led consumers to believe the prices were fixed and therefore exempt from increases.
The Antitrust Authority also fined Sky a third time, €1,4 million, for offering customers "advantageous offers, aimed at customer retention," primarily through the activation of additional TV packages or additional services such as Sky Wi-Fi. According to the Authority, however, the terms promised to customers were "systematically not met" in the bills, with amounts different and less favorable than those communicated in the commercial proposal.
