Naples – It wasn't an unpredictable fatality, but a dramatic accident whose details are now captured in surveillance video. The death of Giacomo Burtone, the 49-year-old worker from Cercola who died in the industrial area of Via Gianturco, has been explained in the "shocking videos" acquired by the Carabinieri. He was killed by a colleague driving a heavy vehicle.
The dynamics of the impact
According to the reconstruction by the Poggioreale company's military personnel, led by Captain Tiziano Laganà, the events occurred inside a container storage area. Burtone was busy carrying out his duties around a truck when he was struck head-on by a "tug," a powerful mechanical vehicle used to move large metal crates.
The images, described by investigators as "horrifying," show the vehicle moving at high speed within the work perimeter. The impact was violent and sudden: the 49-year-old was crushed under the weight of the vehicle, dying instantly. All attempts at resuscitation by colleagues on the scene were unfortunately unsuccessful.
The investigation and the reactions
The driver of the vehicle is now under investigation for manslaughter. The investigation is now focusing on compliance with safety regulations within the construction site and any malfunctions in the tugboat's signaling systems.
Yet another accidental death has rekindled the debate on workplace safety in Campania. Giovanni Sgambati, general secretary of the UIL (National Union of Workers' Labour) in Naples and Campania, had harsh words for the incident:
This tragedy demonstrates that extraordinary measures are needed to address safety. Where collective bargaining agreements are disregarded and production speed is the sole focus, a phenomenon arises that must be countered with exceptional means.
Burtone's body remains at the disposal of the Judicial Authorities for an autopsy, while the construction site on Via Gianturco has been seized to allow for further technical inspections.
