Naples - The pain became physical, almost unbearable, manifesting itself in a sudden illness that forced her to leave the courtroom. Lucia Barile, mother of twins Sara and Aurora Esposito, the two 26-year-olds killed along with 18-year-old Samuel Tafciu in the explosion at the illegal fireworks factory in Ercolano, experienced another ordeal during the hearing of the defendants' trial.

One year after the terrible tragedy of November 18, 2024, the new Palace of Justice in Naples hosted the summary trial hearing, which sees Pasquale Punzo and Vincenzo D'Angelo, believed to be the employers of the three young men, in the dock. The Prosecutor's Office has requested a heavy sentence for them: twenty years in prison. The third defendant, believed to be the supplier of the gunpowder, has been asked for a four-year sentence.

The drama in the courtroom: a man fell ill while listening to the defense

Wearing a necklace containing photos of her daughters, Lucia Barile broke down emotionally while listening to the defense attorney for one of the defendants, claiming an illness forced her to leave the 410 area. A tragedy within a tragedy, it bears witness to the uninterrupted suffering of the woman, whose life has been irreparably shattered.

"I can't see them anymore, I can't sleep anymore," said the mother of the twins. "This is a mask to raise my granddaughter. I'm empty now; they were my life, and now I can't hold them anymore."

The desperate appeal against exploitation

Despite the excruciating pain, Lucia Barile wanted to launch a heartfelt and desperate appeal that resonates as a warning to the entire community: "To the kids, I say: don't accept illegal jobs, they're gambling with your lives."

Anger at the exploitation mingles with grief. "I had to endure brutal lies," the mother emphasized, revealing the paltry sums paid to the victims: "They gave 150 euros each for that work."

The woman is not asking for a reduction in her sentence, demanding exemplary justice for the loss of her three children: "If it has to be 20 years, there should be no reduction. We're talking about three murders. In my opinion, they're both guilty, and today in court I had to listen to a lot of lies."

Outside the courthouse, the victims' families met with MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who reiterated the community's position: "We cannot accept that lost lives are worth less than illicit gain: the community demands exemplary punishment." Justice, therefore, is called upon to provide a firm response so that tragedies like the one in Ercolano never happen again, breaking the vicious cycle of illegal labor and exploitation.
