Frascati – A carefully planned trap, exploiting an elderly woman's emotional vulnerability and strategically isolating her from her loved ones. This is the unfortunately familiar script of the "fake accident" scam, which unfolded in recent hours on Via Alessandro Secchi in Frascati.
This time, however, the ending was different: the Carabinieri of the Operational and Radiomobile Unit arrested red-handed an 18-year-old from Naples, unemployed and with a criminal record, who had come to the Castelli Romani to collect the loot.
The dynamics reconstructed by the Carabinieri reveal meticulous planning by the gang. It all began with a phone call to the victim, a 76-year-old retired widow who lives with one of her children.
On the other end of the line, an accomplice posed as an insurance company employee, painting a tragic picture: the woman's other son had been involved in a serious car accident and urgently needed money or valuables to cover the damages and avoid legal consequences.
To remain undisturbed, the scammers deployed a diversionary tactic. While the elderly woman was being pressured on the landline, her cohabiting son was contacted on his cell phone by a second accomplice who, falsely identifying himself as a Carabinieri Marshal, urgently summoned him to the police station to sign reports relating to his brother's accident. This was the perfect excuse to remove him from the house and leave his mother alone and defenseless.
A few minutes later, the 18-year-old showed up at the woman's door. Posing as an insurance representative, he demanded the surrender of all the gold in the house. However, the plan collapsed just as he was about to escape: the real Carabinieri, who were already monitoring the situation, promptly intervened on Via Secchi.
The young man was stopped just as he attempted to escape with the stolen jewelry. The stolen goods were recovered and returned to the 76-year-old, while the Neapolitan "traveler" was arrested.
