The young life of Imani Smith, 25, a former child actress best known for playing the young Nala in the popular Disney musical "The Lion King," ended in blood. She was stabbed to death on the morning of December 21st in her New Jersey home.

The dynamics and the rescue

The alarm was raised at 9:18 a.m., when a 911 call reported a stabbing in progress in Edison. According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan, officers arriving on the scene found the 25-year-old woman in critical condition, suffering from severe stab wounds.

The emergency rush to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital was unfortunately in vain: doctors could only pronounce him dead shortly after arrival.

The arrest of his comrade

A swift investigation by the Edison Police Department led to the immediate arrest of a man: Jordan D. Jackson-Small, 35. According to the official statement from authorities, the two "knew each other before the incident," but it was the victim's aunt who clarified the nature of their relationship, confirming that the man was the actress's boyfriend.

Jackson-Small was arrested without resistance and is now being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center. He faces very serious charges: first-degree murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and, even more disturbingly, child endangerment.

A broken career and the family's grief

Imani Smith graced the world's most coveted stage between 2011 and 2012, successfully portraying the role of the lioness Nala as a cub. Born into a performing arts career—her mother, Monique Rance-Helper, is a renowned stage hairstylist for productions such as Pose and In the Heights—Imani was described by those who knew her as "vibrant and full of light."

The tragedy leaves an irreparable void not only in the theater community, but especially in the victim's family: Imani leaves behind her parents, two brothers, and, tragically, a three-year-old son. The family has launched a fundraiser to support legal expenses and the future of the child, who lost his mother in such violent circumstances.
