Last night, in Pianura, a roadblock was breached by a Smart ForFour, sparking a high-speed chase that forced the Carabinieri to fire a gunshot to stop the three young men inside. The incident highlights the growing tensions in the neighborhood.
Naples – A roadblock violated, a high-speed chase through the neighborhood streets, and a gunshot fired by the Carabinieri to stop the escape.
This is the scenario that unfolded yesterday evening, shortly after 20 pm, in Pianura, a western suburb of Naples, where the intervention of the police prevented what could have turned into a much more serious criminal act.
A Smart ForFour carrying three young men failed to stop at the police station's order. Upon seeing the checkpoint, the driver accelerated instead of slowing down, sparking a lengthy pursuit through the neighborhood.
The Carabinieri immediately started tracking them, activating sirens and flashing lights, but the car continued on its way, ignoring the orders to stop.
The escape continued to Corso Duca d'Aosta, where the Smart car slowed abruptly. In those frantic moments, one of the Carabinieri officers got out of his patrol car and, faced with imminent danger, was forced to fire a shot in the air as a warning.
Despite the blow, the car attempted to flee again, but the arrival of other patrols closed off any escape route.
The three occupants of the vehicle, Antonio Riccio, Francesco Pio Covelli, and Alessio Fuorno, were arrested and taken to the police station. They were charged with resisting a public officer, while the Smart was impounded for further investigation.
Powder Magazine Plain
This incident puts the spotlight back on Pianura, a neighborhood increasingly riddled with tension and alarm bells. Investigators haven't ruled out the possibility that the escape was linked to fear of a search that could have uncovered weapons, stolen goods, or evidence of a planned robbery.
In an area marked by the presence and rivalries between Camorra groups, every checkpoint becomes a boundary line and every pursuit can turn into an armed conflict.
The arrests and the timely intervention of the Carabinieri likely nipped an escalation in the bud. But the incident confirms that Pianura remains a powder keg, contested by clans for control of illicit activities, where it takes little for the streets to turn into a battlefield.
