He had presented himself as an official, ready to "verify" jewelry and cash on behalf of the Court. In reality, it was the final act of a well-orchestrated scam that netted approximately €70 to the detriment of an elderly couple from Turin. For those events, the police executed a precautionary detention order against a 37-year-old Neapolitan man, arrested in Naples by officers from the San Ferdinando police station on the orders of the Turin investigating judge.

The incident dates back to October 21st, when the couple's husband received a phone call on his landline. On the other end, a self-styled Carabinieri officer urged him to report urgently to the Carabinieri station on Via Catania, claiming that his car had been involved in a robbery. The man, frightened and convinced of the call's veracity, immediately left the house.

Shortly thereafter, the scammers engaged the wife, contacting her first on her landline and then on her cell phone. Again, the person calling identified himself as a Carabinieri officer, asking specific questions about the possible presence of a safe and the contents of the house. Adding to the credibility of the scam was the announcement of the imminent arrival of a supposed court expert, tasked with comparing jewelry and valuables with those stolen during the robbery.

A man showed up at the door and managed to get cash, postal orders, and gold jewelry, worth a total of approximately 70 euros. Only later did the couple realize they had been the victims of a scam.

The police investigation, based on the analysis of video surveillance footage, the victims' testimonies, the examination of telephone traffic, and the use of technological tools, led to the identification of the perpetrator. The man was tracked down and arrested in Naples, putting an end to a scam that exploited fear and trust to target the most vulnerable.

It's incredible how things like this can happen. Elderly people are extremely vulnerable and shouldn't be put in such dangerous situations. More should be done to protect citizens from similar acts of deception.
