Caserta – At dawn today, the Carabinieri conducted a large-scale operation to combat illegal landfills between Mondragone, Castel Volturno, Carinola, and Francolise, in the heart of the so-called Land of Fires.

The operation, part of a plan of extraordinary controls against illegal waste disposal, led to the precautionary seizure of several areas transformed into open-air landfills and the reporting of those responsible for environmental violations.

In Mondragone, along the Via Domitiana—near the former IDAC industrial complex and the fruit and vegetable market—a large illegal landfill was discovered on municipal land: approximately 300 m² occupied by piles of plastic, metal, and solid urban waste. The area was seized and handed over to the municipal administration for cleanup. The same fate befell additional piles discovered between the Stercolilli area and the Bagnara roundabout, totaling approximately 150 m² along the roadside.

In Castel Volturno, the military discovered a landfill site built over time on a private property: 600 square meters covered with ferrous metals of mechanical origin, plastics, and various waste. The owner has been reported to the judicial authorities.

In Carinola, in the Santa Croce district, Carabinieri officers from the local station inspected a manufacturing facility. The approximately 400 m² area exhibited serious environmental irregularities, including a lack of permits for atmospheric emissions and uncontrolled storage of decommissioned machinery, plastics, and paint containers. The entire site was seized.

Finally, in Francolise, a hamlet of Sant'Andrea del Pizzone, an illegal dumping of non-hazardous waste was discovered on an agricultural plot: plastic sheeting, irrigation channels, agricultural fences, and the carcasses of agricultural vehicles abandoned on approximately 650 m² of land. The area was also seized.

In all cases, the Carabinieri immediately informed the competent Public Prosecutor's Office, proceeding with the reports required by waste and environmental protection legislation. The intervention on January 22nd represents yet another sign of the State's constant presence in the area: targeted checks, detailed knowledge of the local context, and decisive action against those who continue to deface the landscape and put the health of citizens at risk in one of the most sensitive areas of Campania.

The operation carried out by the Carabinieri is important because it serves to protect the environment, but I wonder if these checks alone are enough to stop the problem of illegal landfills in Campania. More long-term measures are needed.
