The Airola juvenile prison remains open and is once again a place worth investing in. This is the message from today's visit by the Campania region's prison ombudsman, Samuele Ciambriello, to the juvenile prison in the Benevento area. Director Giulia Magliuolo welcomed him to a context that, after years of uncertainty and slowdowns, is showing concrete signs of recovery.

The facility currently houses eighteen inmates, in addition to two youths admitted to the regime provided for by Article 21 of the penitentiary system. This small but significant number represents a starting point worth defending, according to Ciambriello. The guarantor's satisfaction concerns, first and foremost, the facility's continuity: the IPM has not closed and, more importantly, the youths have not been transferred elsewhere.

The real issue, however, remains the renovation work. After years of repeated construction halts, the institute is finally undergoing structural work funded to the tune of approximately twenty million euros. This significant sum, according to Ciambriello, must translate into concrete and lasting results. The hope is that this time there will be no further interruptions and that all the institutions involved will work together, putting aside delays and buck-passing.

In the Airola juvenile prison, the ombudsman emphasizes, what's at stake is not only the efficiency of the facility, but also the effectiveness of a model that must combine safety, the dignity of prison staff, and the true educational function of punishment. The reopening of the construction site thus serves as a political and social signal: investing in these spaces means investing in the future of juvenile detainees and in the credibility of the entire prison system.

The article talks about a juvenile prison that remains open, and it looks like some work is about to begin. But I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. The kids need help, but the risk is high.
