Avellino – A manhunt is underway in the streets of Avellino following the tragic accident that occurred yesterday morning on Via De Renzi. A driver hit two dogs that were crossing the road, then sped off without stopping to provide assistance.
The dynamics of the accident
According to the reconstruction by police officers, the two animals—a Labrador and a Dogo Argentino—were properly leashed by their owners. The collision occurred right at the crosswalk, when the two pedestrians crossed paths.
The force of the impact left no chance for the Labrador, who died instantly before the eyes of his owners, who miraculously remained unharmed but in shock. The Dogo Argentino, however, is in critical condition and was rushed to a veterinary clinic where delicate surgery was performed in an attempt to save his life.
Investigators are already tracking the perpetrator. The central area where the accident occurred is extensively covered by public and private video surveillance systems. Officers are reviewing the footage to isolate the vehicle's license plate number. Sources close to the police headquarters suggest the search is closing in: identifying the hit-and-run driver could be a matter of hours.
The driver now risks heavy fines and criminal charges under the Highway Code and the rules on animal cruelty and killing, aggravated by the escape.
