Naples, Bruno Petrone injured: the young gang remains in prison

No reprieve for the four minors charged with the attempted murder of soccer player Bruno Petrone in the Baretti di Chiaia neighborhood. The judges denied the defense's request for house arrest to allow the boys to return to school. Meanwhile, a new investigative front has opened: a minor has been identified for the retaliatory fire at the front door of one of the suspects.

Naples – No discounts, no concessions. The judges' hand remains firm on the San Carlo all'Arena gang.

The Court of Review yesterday afternoon confirmed the pre-trial detention of four young people—a fifteen-year-old and three seventeen-year-olds—held responsible for the brutal attempted murder of Bruno Petrone, the 18-year-old footballer for Unione Sportiva Angri 1927, stabbed in the stomach and side during a brawl in the "bedlam" of the Baretti di Chiaia neighborhood.

The decision of the Review

The defense team's strategy, which had attempted to play the school remediation card, fell on deaf ears. The lawyers had requested a mitigation of the measure, aiming for house arrest to allow the suspects to continue their studies.

This request was met with firm opposition from the Deputy Public Prosecutor at the Juvenile Court, who reiterated the need for detention in a penitentiary institution given the seriousness of the crime and the alleged premeditation. The hard line, already outlined last December 30th by preliminary investigations judge Anita Polito at the request of prosecutor Claudia De Luca, is therefore also being reinforced in the second instance.

Thirteen Seconds of Madness

The evidence weighed heavily on the judges' decision, particularly the 13-second video acquired by investigators. These stills depict the raw dynamics of that night between December 26th and 27th on Via Bisignano: the arrival of the commando on two scooters, the lightning-fast action, the blind violence.

Five men took action (four were arrested and a fifth was reported at large), unleashing a brutal attack on the 18-year-old, who ended up hospitalized in serious condition. A punitive operation that, according to the prosecution, leaves no room for benevolent interpretations.

The shadow of transversal revenge

While the judicial front solidifies with the confirmation of the prison sentence, the investigative front expands, revealing disturbing scenarios of internal feuds or retaliation. The Carabinieri have shed light on the incident that occurred on the night of January 11th to 12th, when flames engulfed the front door of the home of one of the four arrested young men, located on Via Carlo de Marco.

Thanks to analysis of video surveillance cameras in the area, officers located a minor, who is now under investigation and at large. Initial investigations reveal a detail that complicates the situation: the identified young man is believed to be a friend of one of the gang members, the same one who turned himself in in the hours immediately following Petrone's attack.

A sign, perhaps a warning, suggesting that the case is far from over. Investigations are continuing apace to determine the involvement of other young people and to delineate the contours of a violence that appears to be self-perpetuating.

The situation in Naples is complex, where youth appear to be in danger. The court's decision is right, but I wonder if there are better solutions to prevent violence among young people, even if it is difficult.
