The Caserta Nord Highway Police arrested two criminals from the province of Naples, believed to be responsible for an aggravated fraud against an elderly couple aged 83 and 79, residents of Grosseto.
The operation was triggered during a routine traffic patrol along the motorways under their jurisdiction. A Highway Patrol patrol, travelling on the southbound carriageway of the A1 motorway, intercepted a Ford Puma with two men inside, whose behaviour immediately aroused suspicion. The vehicle was then stopped within the Teano Ovest service area.
During the check, officers conducted a personal search, which was later extended to the vehicle. Inside the car, they found a jar containing numerous gold jewelry items—including watches, necklaces, rings, and coins—as well as €790 in cash. The two detainees were unable to provide any plausible justification for the possession of the items.
Meanwhile, the Grosseto Municipal Police received a report regarding that very vehicle, which they said was presumably used to commit a scam against an elderly couple living in the Tuscan city.
The two individuals were escorted to the offices of the Caserta Nord Highway Police Sub-section where, following a complex investigative effort conducted in collaboration with the Grosseto Municipal Police, it was possible to ascertain—albeit in the initial phase of the preliminary investigation—that the jewelry and money found constituted the proceeds of the crime committed shortly beforehand in Grosseto.
The scam was carried out using the tried-and-true ploy of a phone call from a supposedly financially struggling family member, who induced the victims to collect money and valuables to deliver to a fake postal worker. A few minutes after the call, a man showed up at the elderly couple's home, demanding the delivery of €790 and all the gold jewelry in their possession.
The loot, worth a total of over €15.000, has been seized pending its return to its rightful owners.
The preliminary investigations judge ordered one of the suspects to be placed under house arrest, while the other was required to report to the Judicial Police.
