Torre Annunziata – Three years after that tragic stormy night, the search for the truth behind Ugo Manganaro's death has reached a courtroom. A preliminary hearing opened today at the Torre Annunziata Courthouse involving six people—two businessmen and four Enel officials—charged with cooperative manslaughter.
The tragedy and the investigation
It was November 22, 2022 when the 34-year-old fisherman from Vico Equense, who had gone to the shore to secure his nets during a violent storm, was struck by a fatal electric shock.
According to the reconstruction by prosecutors Nunzio Fragliasso and Andreana Ambrosino, the cause of death was an exposed wire inside an inadequately maintained electrical substation.
The Prosecutor's Office's investigations highlighted alleged omissions and irregularities in the management of the faults, leading to the request for the six defendants to be sent to trial.
The garrison: "Presence in the territory and responsibility"
Outside the courthouse, friends and relatives gathered in a silent sit-in to support the Manganaro family. Mariangela De Simone, the victim's mother, launched a heartfelt appeal:
"We demand justice for Ugo. My son died from an uncontrolled power line. Those who govern the territory must ensure safety and accountability."
The legal battle
The family, a civil party, is assisted by lawyer Enrica Visconti, who emphasizes the urgency of obtaining clear answers after years of pain:
The goal: To establish individual responsibility for alleged maintenance deficiencies.
Confidence: "We are confident in the work of the judiciary," the lawyer declared, "but we are preparing for a long legal battle."
The preliminary hearing judge will now have to decide whether the evidence gathered by the prosecutor's office is sufficient to order a trial, transforming the charges into a hearing that the community of Vico Equense awaits with bated breath.
