Naples – A historic turning point for the San Giovanni a Teduccio coastline is upon us. Starting today, Monday, January 12th, cleanup operations will begin on the last section of the eastern beach, marking the final stage of a decades-long redevelopment process.
The project, part of the broader Program Agreement for the Eastern Naples Site of National Interest (SIN), aims to restore to the citizens a stretch of coast that has been closed for too long due to pollution and degradation.
The final piece: Arenile 3
The City of Naples' timetable is clear: new excavations and safety operations will focus on the portion known as Arenile 3. According to technicians' forecasts, the work should be completed by March 2026. This is the last technical step necessary before the definitive clearing of the entire coastline.
Update on the work: asbestos removed and certification pending
As the new construction site begins, reassuring news is arriving from other sectors already affected by the work:
Beach 2: The Local Health Authority (ASL) has officially certified the complete removal of asbestos-containing materials. This complex operation has removed the main obstacle to public health and environmental safety in the neighborhood.
Beach 4: The work has been formally completed. The area is currently being examined by ARPAC (Campania Regional Agency for Environmental Protection) for the necessary counter-analysis.
Once the remediation certificates have been obtained, these areas can also be officially declared healthy.
"A fundamental step towards returning the coastline to the citizens after decades of waiting," they emphasize at Palazzo San Giacomo.
Goal: swimmable by summer 2026
The coordination of these efforts has an ambitious but concrete goal: to make the entire area accessible, safe, and suitable for swimming by the upcoming summer season. The challenge is to transform what for years has been an open wound in the eastern suburbs into a usable public asset, breaking down the barriers that have separated the neighborhood from its sea.
If the schedule is adhered to, the summer of 2026 could be remembered as the summer of "reclaiming the sea" for thousands of residents of eastern Naples.

It's important that something is finally done for the San Giovanni a Teduccio coastline. However, I wonder if the work will actually be completed by March 2026. There have been so many problems in the past, and I hope it doesn't happen again.
