Naples – Umberto Cella, 29, was ambushed overnight on Via Amerigo Vespucci while he was driving with a friend. Fortunately, the bullet grazed him, and his condition is now considered critical.
Naples – A targeted ambush, stemming from disagreements between young drug dealers active in the city center, was carried out under the watchful eye of video surveillance cameras.
This is the investigative framework that is emerging surrounding the shooting of Umberto Cella, 29, originally from the Case Nuove area, who was shot in the head the other night on Via Amerigo Vespucci.
The young man was grazed by a bullet fired from a scooter carrying two passengers while he was riding in a car with a friend, who was unharmed. The shot did not damage any vital organs, and Cella, admitted to Pellegrini Hospital with a guarded prognosis, is not in danger of dying.
According to the reconstruction provided to investigators, the two were traveling in a Volkswagen T-Roc when, around 2:00 a.m., a scooter pulled up alongside the car. The passenger, his face covered by a helmet, pulled out a pistol and fired two shots into the passenger compartment: one missed, the other struck the 29-year-old in the head. The two attackers then immediately disappeared into the nighttime traffic.
From the first hours after the shooting, the Police Flying Squad ruled out the possibility of a robbery gone wrong. The evidence gathered instead points to a failed homicide, stemming from drug dealing-related disputes involving youth groups operating in the historic center and surrounding areas.
Analysis of images from the numerous security cameras along Via Vespucci and the streets connecting to Via Marina could prove crucial to the investigation. The cameras would have captured crucial moments of the attack, including the attackers' escape, providing investigators with useful clues to identify the perpetrators and reconstruct the scooter's route before and after the raid.
The alarm was raised by a report to 113. The victim's friend then rushed Cella to the Pellegrini emergency room, where doctors performed emergency surgery. The speed of the emergency response prevented more serious consequences.
The witness was interviewed at length during the night, while Umberto Cella—who has only one previous complaint for theft and no convictions—will be questioned as soon as his condition allows.
Investigators are now aiming to clarify the circumstances of the clash and the victim's relationships within the city's drug dealing environment, in the belief that the raid was not a demonstration, but an elimination attempt that failed by only a few centimetres.
