NAPLES – The closure of the historic railway canteen at Napoli Centrale, scheduled for February 28, is raising concerns among unions and workers, as it puts at risk 12 jobs and the provision of hot meals to the community, a fundamental social asset that deserves protection.
NAPLES – The historic railway cafeteria at Napoli Centrale, a hub for railway staff, students, workers, and residents, will close on February 28. The announcement came from Ferservizi, the FS Group company that manages the service on behalf of RFI, and immediately raised concerns among unions and workers.
According to Angelo Lustro, Massimo Aversa, and Pierino Ferraiuolo, general secretaries of Filt-Cgil, Fit-Cisl, and Uiltrasporti, respectively, the closure risks jeopardizing 12 jobs and eliminating a social service that has provided hot meals at controlled prices for years, combining hospitality, quality, and social function. "It's not just a refreshment point," the union representatives emphasize, "but a local public service that deserves protection."
The unions have launched an urgent appeal to RFI, Ferservizi, and local and regional institutions to ensure service continuity, through a new contract or a public expression of interest, protecting all levels of employment and enhancing the canteen's social function. Lustro, Aversa, and Ferraiuolo warn that they will not stand idly by: "We will stand by the workers, ready to mobilize to defend their rights, jobs, and community services."

The closure of the railway canteen is a terrible thing, as it puts jobs and services at risk. It would be better to find a way to keep the service open for everyone who needs it.
