Naples – On the eve of the feast of Sant'Antonio Abate, attention is once again focused on the so-called 'foocarazzi', a practice that, according to Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, has lost all ties to religious tradition and has transformed into a phenomenon of widespread lawlessness and territorial control by organized crime.
Despite the preventive measures implemented by the Municipal Police and Fire Brigade, the so-called paranze are already operating in several neighborhoods of the city, with piles of wood and flammable material ready to be set alight.
The areas considered most at risk are the Spanish Quarters, Torretta, Sanità, and Cavone in Piazza Dante, which are being monitored with particular concern by law enforcement.
"What we've been witnessing for some time now has nothing to do with religion or folklore," Borrelli denounces. "These fires have become a haven for criminal gangs, a veritable training ground for young men who are being groomed for the Camorra. The memorial stone is no longer a ritual: it's a symbol of power and an open challenge to the state."
The MP invites citizens not to remain spectators and to actively collaborate with the institutions, reporting in real time the presence of fires or piles of wood through the WhatsApp number 366 266 2829. “The collaboration of residents is fundamental – he explains – to allow preventive seizures and timely interventions before the fire is started”.
Of further concern is the social dimension of the phenomenon. "We are witnessing a disturbing trend," Borrelli concludes, "child gangs competing online to build the biggest bonfire, in an escalation of illegality that threatens citizen safety and public health.
The Camorra has seized religious cults to attract young people: it is necessary to stop this outrage and restore the symbols of our land to legality and true devotion."

Reading this article, I realized that the firecracker situation has become very serious. People no longer seem interested in tradition, but only in creating problems. It's important that everyone works together to stop this illegality.
