Naples – A swift operation concluded within twenty-four hours that led to the arrest of a 22-year-old from Arzano, responsible for ramming a Naples Local Police motorcycle officer to avoid a traffic stop.
The young man will now have to answer for resisting a public official, aggravated personal injury, aggravated damage and simulating a crime.
The chase in the center
The incident occurred on the afternoon of January 8th, around 16:00 PM, when a patrol of local police motorcycles, on duty in Piazza Bovio, ordered a gray Audi to stop after catching the driver using his cell phone while driving.
The 22-year-old's reaction was immediate: instead of pulling over, he accelerated sharply towards Via Medina, starting a dangerous chase through the streets of the historic center.
While fleeing through the crowded city streets, the driver deliberately rammed one of the officers tailgating him on a motorcycle, causing him to fall violently onto the asphalt. After the violent impact, the Audi sped off in the direction of Via Cristoforo Colombo, while the injured officer was immediately assisted by his colleagues and taken to the hospital for treatment.
The GIT's lightning investigations
The investigation began immediately, coordinated by the GIT (Territorial Intervention Group) of the Naples Local Police. Through systematic analysis of video surveillance cameras scattered around the city center, investigators were able to trace the vehicle's license plate, which was registered to a car rental company. Within hours, the Audi was located in a parking lot in the port area and placed under criminal seizure.
The false complaint and the arrest
In a desperate attempt to establish an alibi, the 22-year-old showed up on the morning of January 9th at the Carabinieri station in Arzano to falsely report the vehicle theft, thus attempting to clear himself of the charges. This move proved fatal: thanks to the collaborative investigation between the Naples and Arzano local police, the young man was intercepted and arrested just as he was filing the false report with the Carabinieri.
In addition to the severe criminal consequences, the driver was charged with numerous traffic violations during the escape in the center of Naples, resulting in the immediate revocation of his driving license. Authorities have also initiated procedures to recover the damage caused to the Local Police vehicle and to quantify the medical expenses incurred for the injured officer's treatment.
Investigative efforts are still ongoing to identify the other three passengers in the car during the getaway, who will face charges of aiding and abetting. Investigators are reviewing additional surveillance footage to identify the 22-year-old's accomplices.

The arrest of this young man is a serious matter, but I question whether the safety measures during checks are sufficient. Furthermore, it's important to consider how to educate young people to respect traffic rules to avoid similar accidents.
