Ottaviano – The state's offensive against widespread lawlessness in the Vesuvian area continues unabated. Members of the Naples Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza have intensified controls in the municipality of Ottaviano, implementing a plan to monitor the area's economic affairs, stemming from recent directives from the Prefect of Naples, Michele Di Bari, during the last Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security.

The raid and the numbers The operation, which involved men from the Ottaviano Company and the "Baschi Verdi" of the Naples Emergency Response Group, also relied on the nose skills of canine units. The overall toll was 82 people identified and 78 vehicles inspected, demonstrating a widespread coverage of the area's main roads.

Weapons and drugs in the car. The most critical incident occurred during a stop of a small car with two young people on board, including a minor. The young people's suspicious behavior prompted the Guardia di Finanza (Fiamme Gialle) to conduct a thorough search, which led to the discovery of:

A blank pistol without the red cap (modified to look like a real gun);

A metal stick designed to offend;

Different doses of narcotic substance.

In addition to seizing the weapons and drugs, the officers also seized the vehicle, which was found to be uninsured. The two young men were reported to the competent authorities for drug possession and illegal possession of weapons.

The control operation in the municipality of Ottaviano appears to have been well-organized, but I question whether these raids are truly effective in the long term against crime. The presence of the Guardia di Finanza is important, but more prevention is needed.
