Rome – Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the dioceses of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino and Foligno, united in persona Episcopi, presented by Monsignor Domenico Sorrentino.

At the same time, the Pope appointed Monsignor Felice Accrocca, until now metropolitan archbishop of Benevento, as bishop of the two dioceses, once again uniting the episcopal sees and conferring on him the title of archbishop ad personam.

Monsignor Accrocca was born on December 2, 1959, in Cori, in the province of Latina. After his theological studies at the Pontifical Leonine College in Anagni, he earned a degree in Literature from La Sapienza University in Rome and a doctorate in Ecclesiastical History from the Pontifical Gregorian University.

Ordained a priest on July 12, 1986, he was incardinated in the diocese of Latina-Terracina-Sezze-Priverno. On February 18, 2016, he was elected to the metropolitan archbishopric of Benevento, receiving episcopal ordination on May 15 of the same year.

With his new appointment, Monsignor Accrocca is called to lead one of the most significant ecclesial entities in Umbria, which includes the diocese of Assisi, a city symbolic of Franciscan spirituality, and that of Foligno, already united under a single bishop.

It's interesting to see how the Church continues to make changes to its structure. However, I'm not sure whether Pope Leo XIV's decision will be well received by the faithful. Let's hope that Monsignor Accrocca can bring about a renewal.
