Pozzuoli – It seemed like a scene from a movie, but it was the reality of a quiet afternoon in Piazza Italo Balbo. A 53-year-old man, originally from the Czech Republic, was arrested by officers from the Pozzuoli Police Station while sitting on a bench, intent on handling and loading a crossbow.
The police officers, on their usual patrol, noticed the man forcefully attempting to pull back the gun's cord. Fearing for the safety of passersby, they intervened immediately, disarming him and subduing him before he could fire any missiles.
An international criminal record
Upon further investigation, the 53-year-old was found to be a fugitive with a serious criminal record. A European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by the Czech authorities in July 2022 for the crime of assault was pending against him.
But his legal troubles didn't end beyond national borders. The man was also wanted by the Bolzano prosecutor's office: a warrant for his arrest issued in August 2023 was pending. He is serving a six-month prison sentence for aggravated theft committed in South Tyrol in 2017.
In addition to the execution of the two restraining orders, the man was charged at large with possession of weapons or objects capable of causing harm. After the usual formalities, the foreign national was taken to prison, ending a years-long period of hiding that ended abruptly on a bench in Pozzuoli.

Yes, it's truly surprising. But many details remain unclear, such as why he was in Italy and why he chose that time and place to load the weapon. We need to understand the situation better.
The Pozzuoli incident was very strange; it seems incredible that a person could have a crossbow in a public place. I wonder how no one noticed the man before, and what prompted him to do so.
