The investigation into the death of Luca La Penna, 42, believed to be close to the De Luca Bossa clan of Ponticelli, has seen a significant breakthrough. The Prosecutor's Office has requested the indictment of two female doctors, aged 33 and 29, who treated the inmate, who died on January 9, 2025, after falling ill in his cell in Secondigliano prison.

According to the reconstruction, La Penna's already critical condition further deteriorated during his emergency transfer to Cardarelli Hospital, where he arrived in desperate condition and died shortly thereafter.

The investigation focuses on the promptness of the rescue operations, which the victim's family, assisted by lawyer Paolo Gallina, consider inadequate.

On January 20th, at the conclusion of the preliminary hearing, investigating judge Maria Rosaria Aufieri will have to decide whether to accept the prosecution's request and order the trial of the two suspects. The results of the autopsy ordered by public prosecutor Giuliana Giuliano have also been incorporated into the investigation file.

The prosecutor's technical consultant's findings would have provided evidence supporting the prosecution's hypothesis of slow medical care, while maintaining the presumption of innocence of the two doctors until a final conviction.

From the hours immediately following his death, La Penna's family pointed the finger at the medical staff at Secondigliano prison, alleging negligence. According to the findings, the 42-year-old was suffering from accelerated pneumonia, a condition considered curable if diagnosed and treated promptly.

Arrested in January 2022, Luca La Penna was believed to be one of the key figures in the resurgence of the Minichini-De Luca Bossa clan in the Ponticelli neighborhood, including through violent actions and bombings. At the time of his death, he was serving a prison sentence and had approximately three years remaining, after which he would be released.

It's a very complex and sad situation; Luca La Penna's death also highlights the problems of the prison system. I hope the issue of the female doctors and the causes of death are clarified, but it's not easy.
