Osimo – Justice has closed in on three scammers in two separate operations conducted between the Marche and Tuscany regions. While the first case involved the conclusion of a legal process for a digital scam, the second involved timely police intervention that foiled a heinous attack on a vulnerable victim.

Osimo: The Marketplace "trap" costs eight months of house arrest.

Justice has presented the bill to a 51-year-old of Neapolitan origins, but resident in Osimo, who was definitively convicted for a fraud committed in March 2021.

The modus operandi: The man had put car spare parts up for sale on a well-known social network at rock-bottom prices.

The damage: A buyer from Fabriano, attracted by the deal, had paid 250 euros onto a prepaid card. The outcome: After receiving the money, the seller vanished into thin air.

The Carabinieri of the local station executed the arrest warrant: the man will now have to serve his sentence under house arrest.

Arezzo: The fake "Corporation Officer" and the gold stolen from the elderly woman

A far more dramatic scenario was experienced by an 87-year-old woman from the historic center of Arezzo, who ended up in the sights of two scammers specializing in the tried-and-tested, yet always effective, "fake grandson" trick.

The telephone scam

The victim was contacted by a supposed nephew who, in an alarmed tone, begged for €5.000 to pay urgent fines and avoid arrest. When the elderly woman suggested going to the post office, the thug convinced her to stay home: "There's no time, the Carabinieri will come by to collect what you have."

Shortly thereafter, an accomplice showed up at the door, pretending to be a Carabinieri officer, and managed to secure gold jewelry and €450 in cash. However, the two accomplices' escape was short-lived:

A patrol from the Flying Squad noticed the suspicious driving of their car.

The vehicle was tailed and stopped on the Arezzo-Battifolle ring road.

The search brought to light the entire loot, hidden in the passenger compartment.

The two men, both with specific criminal records, were arrested and transferred to the Arezzo prison. The stolen goods were recovered in full and returned to their rightful owner, putting an end to an anguished afternoon.

This article talks about scams, and it seems serious, but I don't understand how people fall for these traps. It's important to be careful, but sometimes it's hard to recognize when someone is lying, especially if they're pretending to be a family member.
