Six municipalities in the Salerno area are attempting to rethink the future of schools in their inland and mountainous areas, focusing on merging schools as a way to strengthen the curriculum and ensure educational continuity. The proposal emerged during a meeting between the mayors of the Union of Municipalities of the Fasanella Valley, which includes Aquara, Bellosguardo, Corleto Monforte, Ottati, Sant'Angelo a Fasanella, and Castelcivita.
The initiative was initiated by the municipal administration of Sant'Angelo a Fasanella and is part of the regional guidelines on school sizing and the organization of the education network. At the heart of the discussion was the need to adapt the school system to the demographic and geographical characteristics of the area, avoiding the progressive weakening of schools in inland areas.
The proposed proposal calls for the Campania Region to merge the schools of Aquara, Castelcivita, Corleto Monforte, and Sant'Angelo a Fasanella into the Castel San Lorenzo Comprehensive Institute, starting in the 2026/2027 school year. This decision, according to the proponents, reflects a coherent territorial logic, since the affected municipalities are within the Calore and Alburni Valleys, the same area as other centers already affiliated with the same institute.
The meeting also revealed a shared appreciation of the importance of the initiative. The merger is described as "a first concrete step toward strengthening school autonomy in mountain areas," with the goal of protecting the right to education and strengthening the presence of schools in small municipalities. The proposal has already received positive feedback from the participating schools and is now before the Region for its assessment.

It's important that municipalities are working to strengthen schools in inland areas, but I hope there will be no problems with merging. Schools are essential for young people and must be well-organized.
