Torre Annunziata – The unerring nose of drug-sniffing dog Naja foiled the plan of a 37-year-old man from Torre Annunziata, who had hidden marijuana and hashish in homemade caches inside his apartment.
The man was arrested on charges of possession with intent to sell narcotics. The arrest occurred during a large-scale extraordinary territorial control operation ordered by the Naples Police Headquarters, a joint operation involving the State Police, Carabinieri, and the Guardia di Finanza.
Particular attention was paid to the most sensitive neighborhoods: Annunziata, Poverelli, Penniniello, and Provolera. Officers from the local police station, supported by the Campania Crime Prevention Unit and a canine unit from the Office of General Prevention and Public Rescue, searched the home of the 37-year-old—who was already known to law enforcement for a specific drug-related criminal record.
Thanks to the intervention of Naja, the German Shepherd specialized in drug detection, expertly constructed hiding places were discovered: false bottoms and cavities where ten packages of marijuana (approximately 800 grams in total), two blocks and a piece of hashish (approximately 300 grams in total), a precision scale, packaging material, and €2.300 in cash of various denominations, believed to be the proceeds of the illegal activity, were hidden.
At the same time, during the same checkpoint—which led to the identification of 320 people (78 of whom had criminal records), the inspection of 150 vehicles (three administratively seized), the issuance of 45 traffic fines, the inspection of eight commercial establishments, and the arrest of 24 individuals subject to restrictive measures—a second significant incident occurred. A patrol noticed a car whose driver, upon seeing law enforcement, accelerated in an attempt to evade the checkpoint despite a warning to stop.
A brief pursuit ensued, involving maneuvers dangerous to traffic. The vehicle was eventually stopped: the driver was a 40-year-old man from Castellammare di Stabia, arrested for resisting a public officer. This operation confirms the intensification of "high-impact" operations in the Oplonti area, aimed at combating petty crime and drug dealing in the most at-risk neighborhoods. Both arrested individuals are awaiting judicial review for the next phases: validation and adjudication.
