Giugliano – This morning, a strike took place at the Leroy Merlin store in the Auchan shopping center in Giugliano. The UILTuCS Campania union organized a sit-in strike to protest the dismissal of two workers, ordered just days before Christmas for absences justified by medical certificates.
The union initiative stems from "deep concern" over corporate behavior that, according to the union, conflicts with the values of solidarity, inclusion, and employee well-being promoted by Leroy Merlin in its Code of Ethics.
"Firing a sick person is a serious and unjust act, which violates the right to health enshrined in the Constitution and current legislation," UILTuCS representatives denounce. Illness, they emphasize, is not a choice and cannot be penalized, but these measures send a message of fear among employees: falling ill could cost them their jobs.
The dispute, which the union calls not an isolated case but a symptom of a "corporate culture that puts numbers before the dignity of individuals," aims to draw attention to the entire workforce. A company's credibility, UILTuCS argues, is measured by concrete decisions, not by slogans or image campaigns.
Among the demands made of Leroy Merlin: public clarification on the reasons for the layoffs, restoration of workers' rights, and effective demonstration of social responsibility.
Full solidarity is expressed to the two women affected and to all employees facing similar situations. While waiting for responses from the company, the mobilization could continue in the coming days.

What's happening at Leroy Merlin is very sad. It's unfair to fire sick workers for reasons they can't control. Sick leave is a part of life, and companies should be more empathetic.
