Mugnano – The dawn accident on the external ring road between Mugnano and Melito is a dramatic awakening for the community of Villaricca, which mourns the untimely death of Rocco D'Alterio, 36, the victim of a violent road accident that occurred at dawn.
The crash occurred along the outer ring road, in the "cursed" section on the border between the municipalities of Mugnano and Melito, near a well-known petrol station.
But what initially seemed like a random road tragedy has in the last few hours taken on the character of a mystery that the Prosecutor's Office is eager to resolve.
The dynamics and the deadly impact
Rocco D'Alterio, a single man living in Villaricca, was driving his Fiat Punto when the tragedy occurred. According to an initial, disturbing reconstruction, the small car wasn't traveling alone: it was traveling at high speed alongside a second vehicle.
In a fraction of a second, for reasons still under investigation, the two cars collided. A fatal collision that caused the 36-year-old to lose control: the Fiat Punto spun away like a loose cannon, going off the road and crashing violently into a concrete wall.
There was nothing that could be done for D'Alterio; the emergency services, despite their prompt response, could only confirm his death.
The hunt for the ghost car: the investigation
Carabinieri from the Marano mobile radio unit arrived on the scene to conduct the necessary investigations. Investigators are focusing their attention on the second car, which failed to stop to provide assistance and disappeared.
The Carabinieri have already acquired video surveillance footage from the area and the gas station. Their objective is twofold: to identify the license plate and model of the fleeing vehicle and to locate the driver, whose condition could be extremely serious.
The hypotheses: from the argument to the race
Why were the two cars driving side by side at that hour? Investigators aren't ruling out any possibility. The most likely theory at the moment is that a furious argument broke out between the two drivers over trivial matters, perhaps a failure to yield a few hundred meters earlier.
An altercation that may have degenerated into a wild race or a chase, culminating in the reckless maneuver and the collision that sent D'Alterio crashing into the wall. CCTV footage will be crucial in determining whether it was a tragic maneuvering error or a deliberate act.
