Naples – Emergency regarding the transportation of solid urban waste from the Gulf islands: the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, has called a new update meeting this morning, just days after the previous meeting on January 15th, to address the disruption to maritime service due to the breakdown of a Traspemar vessel and the still uncertain repair schedule.

The discussion was attended by the mayors of Barano d'Ischia, Lacco Ameno, and Procida, the presidents of the municipal councils of Forio d'Ischia and Ischia, the head of the company that manages urban waste management for Casamicciola Terme and Procida, along with Antonello Barretta, the general director of the Integrated Waste Management System for the Campania Region, and Dr. Di Grado of the Region's General Directorate for Mobility.

Local government representatives reiterated their call for urgent and shared action, involving the Region, to ensure the immediate resumption of sea transport. Among the options mentioned was the hiring of a second maritime operator to temporarily step in to overcome the critical phase.

However, the Campania General Directorate for Mobility has provided a clear clarification: the transport of non-hazardous waste falls within the broader scope of freight transport, and within this framework, its responsibility would be only residual. Essentially, the service is designated as the direct responsibility of local authorities, although the Region is willing to provide technical support for any initiatives by municipalities.

Finally, municipal administrations were asked to initiate technical assessments to identify structural solutions, also considering a "uniform" approach: a single expression of interest to explore the market and select economic operators willing to perform the service, with adequate reliability requirements.
